Jake Gyllenhaal: Down To Earth Style

At a mere 25 years of age, Jake Gyllenhaal (pronounced Jill-en-hall) has secured his position as one of the most promising new stars in Hollywood. With his screen debut at a mere 10 years of age in City Slickers to his recent role in the blockbuster film The Day After Tomorrow, he has continuously earned rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Along with his acting success, he has earned much praise and press for his cool style and refreshing charm.

Jake GyllenhaalBorn to two Hollywood insiders, director Stephen Gyllenhaal and producer/screenwriter Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal, Jake and his sister, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, were no strangers to the glamorous life of celebrities. However, the two siblings have chosen a variety of quirky and memorable acting roles in independent, yet highly acclaimed films. While many other Hollywood children have ended up with a false sense of entitlement, the Gyllenhall kids have taken their acting seriously and have worked diligently to earn the respect of their peers. And, their down to earth personalities are reflected in their fashions, as well as their choice of film roles.

Jake favors casual t-shirts, Bermuda shorts, loose fitting jeans, and hooded sweatshirts. Sticking to black, white, and muted shades, he doesn’t draw attention to himself with vibrant colors or flashy styles. Often looking more like a college frat boy or a Santa Monica surfer dude, he clearly dresses for comfort and function. To achieve this easy- going California style, keep it simple with a white v-neck t-shirt, a slouchy black zippered sweatshirt, and a baggy pair of knee-length shorts. Loose fitting sweat pants, chinos, or dark jeans are also perfect for a casual lunch or a shopping excursion. Footwear choices can include slip-on sandals, flip-flops, or a pair of Vans sneakers.

For evening, Gyllenhaal prefers modern looking suits with open-collared shirts. However, he has been known to wear a narrow, black tie with a crisp white shirt. Whether he is dressed for an award show or a trip to the supermarket, he keeps his look simple and understated. With his striking features, he simply doesn’t need additional adornment. He definitely has learned the old adage that “less is more.”

Grooming is important to Jake, as it is to any young, successful actor. He prefers his thick, dark brown hair short and spiky. To acquire a similar style, keep hair no longer than 1½-inches in length and use a molding paste to add texture and shine. When working on a film, Jake is often required to adapt his hair for his role. Thus, he is frequently spotted by paparazzi wearing a baseball cap or Peruvian knit hat.

With talent and instinct far beyond his years, Jake Gyllenhaal is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s top leading men. Without being taken in by the trappings of success, he is happy wearing comfortable, approachable clothes and keeping an unassuming profile. This image only adds to his charm and attractiveness. You, too, can develop your own relaxed style by not trying too hard to look cool or tough. Rather, stick with a comfortable, easy-going style that allows your charm and likeability to shine.
