Lenny Kravitz: Rock Superstar Style

By staff
March 19, 2007

In the sixteen years since Lenny Kravitz first scaled the rock and roll charts, he has enjoyed hit after hit and has firmly established himself as one of rock music’s most talented musicians. In this current era of overly produced, talent-lacking pop stars, Kravitz clearly sets himself apart by writing his own music and playing almost every instrument. His sound is a unique fusion of classic rock and roll, soul, and funk with a nod to great musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Wonder. With his jaw-dropping good looks, tattoos, body piercings and an ultra-cool retro style, he has an almost mystical charisma. He clearly loves fashion and has recently joined forces with designer Tom Ford of Gucci to develop his own line of rock and roll inspired clothing.

Lenny Kravitz styleKravitz’ style has gone through several transitions through the years. With the release of his first hit “Let Love Rule,” he favored 1960’s inspired bell-bottom pants, fringed jackets, and vests. His signature long dread locks and dark shades rounded out his look. It’s hard to believe today that Lenny Kravitz used to be better known as the husband to “Cosby Show” star Lisa Bonet. However, after six years of marriage, the two were divorced, and Kravitz subsequently became a rock superstar.

Being of mixed ethnicity, Kravitz has a natural inclination to mix different influences into his music and his fashion. His mother, actress Roxie Roker, was Bahamian, and his father, news producer Sy Kravitz, has Russian Jewish heritage. Lenny’s look these days is just as cool as ever. Although, he has cut the dread locks and now favors a gravity defying afro, he still prefers sensual fabrics like velvet and silk and doesn’t shy away from wearing vintage fur. For those who want to acquire a bit of the Kravitz coolness, hit the vintage stores for a retro shirt from the 1970’s. Pair it with a tight fitting pair of low-rise jeans and a wide leather belt. Don’t be afraid to accessorize with a hat, scarf, or messenger bag.

While Lenny’s style may look slightly eccentric to some, he is actually impeccably well put together. His attention to detail can be found in the way he blends texture and patterns in his clothing. His African-inspired hair complements his clothing, and his body is toned to a muscular perfection. Focusing on detail is a must for those who want to portray an equally chic image.

Lenny Kravitz is a true original in a sea of ready-made pop stars. He would never compromise his music or his style just to fit in with the current fad. This is why he has stood the test of time and still continues to thrill fans and critics alike. If there is one lesson to learn from Lenny, it’s create the style that feels right for you. Take influences from your own background and meld them together to create a look that is all your own.
