Athletic Shoes Outfit

James, Fort Wayne, IN asks
Question: I wear athletic shoes all the time. I’m aware it’s not the best possible look, but it’s just that I can’t imagine myself wearing regular shoes. Is there any advice for me on how to wear athletic shoes to make my outfit work?

Answer:

Probably every stylist will agree in one thing: Never wear sports shoes except for sports. And that is one sound advice that holds nothing but helpful guidance on matter of style. You really shouldn’t wear your athletic shoes with anything else than tracksuit, and only while running or playing sports. Yes, unfortunately for you, if you care at all about style, I must say that you just simply can’t make your look work in your athletic shoes, unless you are a rap star, NBA player, or any other celebrity that, by the way, today can get away with anything they wear (not necessary that they look good).

But, there is a solution. And, as always, solution is in gray zone: in sporty casual shoes and retro sneakers. Actually, I can’t believe that you didn’t already switched to such obvious solution to your problem. You don’t have to wear “formal” shoes, but for God’s sake, don’t wear those athletic shoes which are obviously made specifically for sports. At least today there is wide variety of casual shoes that have nothing to do with “shoes” that you have aversion of.

Few options you may consider:
- The whole Adidas retro line. Adidas Rod Laver sneakers would be great choice.
- Diesel casual shoes. They make some really great casuals.
- All designers’ versions of sporty casuals.
