Suit or Tuxedo to a Cocktail Attire Event?
Reader’s question:
I got invited to an event that requires cocktail attire, but I thought that I should wear a tux. My friend told me that I need to wear a suit. I can’t imagine going without a tux and I don’t want to look out of place, so who’s right?
Answer:
The good news is that you’re not alone: plenty of people confuse cocktail attire and black tie events. The bad news? Your friend was right this time. Black-tie events call for a tux, while cocktail attire includes a stylish suit and tie.
Of course, your attire choice is best guided if you consult with the host and other people attending the event, but general rule is that suit and tie will take you almost anywhere. If your host specifies a suit and tie, don’t go for a tux. Resist the urge to overdress! You won’t look out of place at all in a suit and tie, and best of all, you’ll match your host’s attire.
