Summer Hair Care
What does the summer do to your hair, anyway?
Summer damage is sneaky at best, and if not caught in due time, can wreak havoc on your hair for fall. Anything that’s fun near the shoreline—even if it’s good for the soul—won’t be good for your hairstyle. Before ruling out your morning oceanside swim or your laps in the pool, consider these hair care tips to keep your hair in peak condition.
The Basics
1. Change your shampoo and conditioner.
Go for daily products formulated for dry hair. The summer elements will be drying even on hair that isn’t normally dry. Combat sun, salt, and chlorine with high-quality shampoos. Try to wash your hair every other day.
2. Use a leave-in conditioner.
Leave-in hair products will moisturize your hair and protect it, too. Go for one that will keep treated hair from turning brassy to protect your color.
3. Soak your hair before swimming.
Keep the salt water and chlorine from getting sucked up by your hair. Dry hair will absorb more, so saturate your hair with plain tap water to protect it from the elements.
4. Apply a hair mask.
A hair mask works wonders on dry hair, especially if you rub it into your hair before heading out into the sun. Go for a hair mask with natural ingredients like shea butter.

Chlorine Protectant Sprays
Find a spray that’s easy to apply but protects against sun damage. There are a few excellent products on the market, including Frederick Fekkai Summer Hair Sun Bandana; a heat-activated product that doesn’t leave an oil residue and costs around $20 for a 4.2 ounce bottle.
Sun Protection Cremes
Sun damage can make hair very dry and brittle, and if you’re hair is treated or dry already, you can certainly run into problems managing your hairstyle. Add a touch of UV protectant to your morning routine for the summer months to keep your hair moist.
Try these cremes to protect your hair this summer:
• Kerastase Soleil: This creme is a multi-protection mix that contains 2 UV layers and smooths your style. It’s great for colored hair, as it contains ingredients to protect colored hair.
• Acca Kappa Professional: You’ll get extra shine with this creme, and a subtle but definitely pleasing scent. Fight damage from both water and sun damage with this nourishing cream.
Tip: If you’re traveling and you don’t have your UV cream, you can always use leave-in conditioner for similar effects. Work a leave-in conditioner into your hair and throw on a hat for the beach or for sports.
