Changing Your Skin Care Routine for Fall

By Meieli Sawyer Detoni

Think you’ve heard it before? Maybe you have read about tips for skin care again and again, but it doesn’t hurt to review season-specific tips to keep you looking your finest, does it?

1. Hydrate
You’ve heard it before, but I have a duty to keep telling you (again and again). Bear with me: water is essential, especially for fall. Maintain your daily intake if you already drink enough, to flush out toxins and keep your skin lush.

2. Exfoliate Your Lips
Not just a “chick trick,” but a good one at that. Buy some lip exfoliant and use it before bed to slough off the scalies. Save some cash and use a little white sugar mixed with a tiny amount of warm water.

3. Use Lip Balm
Stay away from petroleum-based lip products, which will dry your lips out more. Are your lips already scaly? Try slicking on a lip treatment product to soften dry spots. Using just lip balm will add layers over chapped skin and won’t look good at all.

4. Do a Switch
Do you know if you have a lotion or cream-based product? Read up on the outside label to check out what you’re using now. Cream-based products are great for fall because they trap in all that moisture that gets sucked out in cool, dry fall weather. Cream-based lotions can be found from most face care lines. Stop by the beauty counter in any major department store and ask, and you can find one that suits you.

5. Reduce Vitamin A Product Use

Keep using your topical vitamin A creams, but don’t forget that they can dry out your skin in fall. It’s probably best to talk to your skin care professional to get recommendations on treatment plan changes, but it could work better to switch from every day to every other day. Products that you’re using that could dry out your skin include Retin-A.

6. Up the Anti-Aging Systems
Fall can be harsh. Who wants to age a couple years every time the weather gets bad?! Not me, and that’s for sure. Focus on delicate skin around the eyes and neck with products from respected brands like Oil of Olay or St. Ives. Fight aging best with one trip to the dermatologist. You’ll be able to get your ideal facial care routine mapped out and save a ton of guesswork.
