What It Is

A duffle coat is a perfect trend to follow if you’re looking for a warm coat with classic appeal. Derived from the town named Duffelzandhoven, from where the warm wool from which these coats are made originates, they traditionally have horn buttons and plaid linings. Duffle coats, synonymous with British style, usually feature a hood and are usually three-quarter length.

Duffle BurberryWhether you choose one of the updated looks of the season or a classic cut, you’ll be right in style this season. From Calvin Klein to Burberry, we’re seeing cool updated shapes with new lines and new lengths. Chunky weaves slide smoothly next to earthy toned versions that look straight out of prep school. Paired with heavy boots or light trainers, they’ll take you anywhere.

On the Runway

John Bartlett
John Bartlett’s coats are a perfect choice for the trendy man. Thick, rich tweeds are toned down with careful tailoring and quality details. Beside whimsical touches like silver and knit trim, we get a good dose of traditional duffles to last us all winter long. John Bartlett’s palette is a fitting group of greens, grays, and browns, and when worn with a knit cap and a satchel, are a quintessential winter solution.

Burberry Prorsum
With duffle coats, you can shift your accessories into full focus. Burberry shows us season after season that coats aren’t just coats, and more importantly, it’s all about what you wear with your duffle that gives it a trendy edge. Here we saw a slim-fitting brown duffle worn closed to the neck and belted, and with it, a coordinating brown plaid tote and silvery gray gloves.

A duffle coat, when at its most basic this season, can be worn as a canvas to highlight bright separates. A jet black duffle is worn open at Burberry to show a vivid purple cashmere cardigan and give it a rush of color. This basic black jacket will coordinate with every one of your trendy separates and was often worn with a scarf to coordinate with the layered shirt beneath.

On a Budget: Duffles are totally trendy and completely affordable. If you can’t afford a designer overcoat, get a duffle from Urban Outfitters or Gap.

Hybrids

New lightweight wool duffle coats are the perfect solution for anyone who loves the look of a duffle coat, but not the weight. This classic prep school look meets other trends perfectly, such as the British elements colliding with downtown cool. Mixing luxurious fabrics with the newest jeans gives all your looks a high class vibe, and when mixed with your duffle coat, you have a comfortable, on-trend solution for the season.

Alongside duffel coats we’ve seen a sportier trend of jacket, and the two run side-by-side in this season’s looks. Try your duffle coat in one of the sporty, fresh colors this season to tie the two trends into one great winter wardrobe.
